Cairo, Egypt.

Egypt’s former president, Hosni Mubarak, has died at the age of 91.

His death was confirmed by Egyptian state news on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the Al-Watan website reported that he died at a military hospital.

Mubarak ruled Egypt for three decades until he was forced out of office in 2011.

After being forced from office during the protests that engulfed parts of the Arab world in 2011, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012 over the deaths of some of the 900 protesters who were killed by security forces during the uprising in 2011.

Both he and his two sons were also convicted of corruption.

That conviction was overturned and he was freed in March 2017.
