Google is celebrating Cesária Évora’s 78th birthday and have her doodle on the search area.

On Google Doodle, the Cape Verdean vocalist is shown against a backdrop of a coastal town with colourful buildings similar to the port of Mindelo, where she was born.

The singer was nicknamed the ‘Barefoot Diva’ for performing without shoes. She was also known as the Queen of Morna.

The first Doodle appeared in 1998, when Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin decided to spoof the traditional “out of office” sign by placing the Burning Man logo over the second “O” in the company’s corporate logo while the two were at the annual arts festival in the Nevada desert.

And on March 21, Google Doodle used AI for the first time in a tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach.
