Art has been identified as a tool for change and empowerment for people mentally disadvantaged as well as key to the wholeness and wellness of mind and body.

This was revealed recently at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos state by the Executive Director of SystemSpecs, Deremi Atanda during the commissioning of Murals, a project creatively handled by patients of the hospital in collaboration with Tender-Arts.

Expressing joy at the flamboyant façade of the hospital beautifully made so as a result of the paintings, Atanda said that SystemSpecs threw its weight behind Tender-Arts into actualising the project because they believe in the strength and abilities of the patients. He added that SystemSpecs is committed to identifying with creativity that can complement medical care as they believe that the total man is a function of his environment largely.

“This is an inspiration for us, giving us an opportunity to live our best on a regular day to making impact to identify with creativity that can complement medicare. This is something to which we are committed because we believe that the total man is a function of his environment largely and whatever we can do in that respect, we will continue to do. So, we want to thank the art and medicine team for giving us the opportunity to partner with you and the management of the Federal Neuro and Psychiatric hospital for the collaboration,” Atanda said.

Corroborating, the Medical Director, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Oluwayemi Ogun, pointed out that art as a whole plays a very positive part in the lives of people struggling with mental ill-health such that it heightens the mood.

According to her, “when you are in one place with everything grey, your mood would be dampened but when you see colours, beautiful writings which are all part of our environment, it tends to elevate your mood.”

Expatiating on the different aspects of art and their positive impact on the human psychology, the Medical Director noted that music is a very important mood booster and expressed satisfaction that the patients were given the opportunity to participate in that aspect, adding that it is supposed to be part of the lined-up activities for patients in the hospital. She thanked the founder of Tender-Arts, Kunle Adewale for waking them up to their responsibilities, even as she revealed that financial constraint is often a major obstacle to achieving set goals.

She appreciated SystemSpecs for synergising with the hospital, while calling on the general public to toe same path as the fintech company and collaborate with the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba.
