A 20-year-old visually impaired Fatima Bala has been given a scholarship by the Qatar Charity shortly after reciting some verses of the Holy Qur’an at the distribution ceremony of 100 digital braille Qur’an by the organization in Sokoto. Fatima lost her sight 6 years ago in a mysterious circumstance.

Speaking to Daily Trust, she said her ambition was to become a medical doctor but because of the predicament, she had now decided to read either English or Arabic language at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto.

“I cannot cope with the university environment because of my condition. I am not only visually impaired but I have problem with my leg. Because of that, I cannot trek for a long distance and you know some of the lecture halls are located far away from one another and from the hostel,” she lamented.

“I am happy with this scholarship because I know they would also consider assisting me with other things to ease my stay in the hostel and my academic pursuit. “This has always been my dream to get the assistance that would enable me further my education because right now, I have only a secondary school certificate and I want to go further.”

Also speaking to Daily Trust, the Executive Secretary of Qatar Charity, Nigeria, Dr Hamdi Muhammad, said the charity would shoulder her educational responsibility after she gets admission in any tertiary institution in the country.

According to him, the charity was all about education, ensuring education to all, especially people with disability. He said that the foundation was giving 10,000 incentives to over 1000 orphans from across 15 states of Nigeria aside from building schools, Mosques and boreholes. He disclosed that 1000 digital braille Qur’anic would be distributed this year.
