Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes Mohamed Salah’s incredible form will mark him out as a serious contender for the next Ballon d’Or.

The annual award recognises the best player on the planet every January and has been shared exclusively between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo every year since 2007.

Brazilian Kaka was the last player to win the award before the Messi and Ronaldo duopoly, but Reds icon Fowler thinks Salah could finally rival the Barcelona and Real Madrid superstars.

In a debate on Twitter with journalist Mark Ogden, Fowler, who scored 183 goals across two spells at Anfield, put forward 39-goal Salah’s case for PFA Player of the Year ahead of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

Salah has scored 10 in his 10 appearances for the Reds and remains on course to become the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush 30 years ago to reach the 40 goals for the season.
